Bujinkan Brisbane - Japanese Martial Arts Club
Bujinkan Brisbane has been offering martial arts classes in Brisbane's western suburbs since 1997.
We welcome beginners, new members, and visitors from other dōjō. Our goal is to provide high-quality instruction in a fun, safe, friendly, and supportive environment. There is no upper age limit, and we welcome students of all cultural backgrounds and levels of physical ability. Currently, we only run adult classes and prefer applicants to be at least eighteen years old.
We primarily train in Budō Taijutsu (Martial Arts Body Technique). Our focus is on the coordinated and efficient use of body mechanics, fluid movement, balance control, timing, and distance, rather than relying on speed and strength.
Budō Taijutsu incorporates a variety of techniques, including striking, kicking, grappling, throws, joint controls, chokes, and holds.
We also offer a broad curriculum of weapon techniques, including:
- Kenjutsu (Sword)
- Hanbōjutsu (Three Foot Stick)
- Bōjutsu (Six Foot Staff)
- Jōjutsu (Four Foot Staff)
- Sōjutsu (Yari - Spear)
- Naginata-jutsu (Halberd)
- Bisentō-jutsu (Large Halberd)
- Jutte-jutsu (Truncheon)
- Shuriken-jutsu (Throwing Blades)

Frequently Asked Questions
I HAVE NO MARITAL ARTS EXPERIENCE, CAN I START?
Yes, we welcome beginners with no previous experience.
WHAT IS THE MINIMUM STARTING AGE?
As we are an adult dōjō, we prefer students to be at least 18 years old.
I AM OVER 60, CAN I START TRAINING?
Yes, you can start training regardless of age and work at your own pace.
ARE THERE COMPETITIONS OR SPARRING?
No, rather than using martial arts to compete with others, we practice basic techniques repeatedly until we are able to respond naturally to an attack.
WHAT EQUIPMENT DO I NEED AND HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
In the very beginning, you don't need anything other than gym clothes to train in, but if you have a uniform from another martial art, you can wear that. Once you decide to join, you will need to purchase a black martial arts uniform. It is also good to purchase your own training weapons, particularly to practice at home, but we always have enough equipment at the dōjō to borrow for practice. We don't sell uniforms or equipment at our dōjō but can recommend suppliers to purchase from.
HOW OFTEN DO I NEED TO TRAIN EACH WEEK?
We recommend getting to training as often as possible, but even if you are only able to get to training once a week, you can still make good progress.
CAN I TRAIN WITH OTHER MARTIAL ARTS GROUPS?
Yes, you can still train with other martial arts groups.
CAN I TRAIN AT ANOTHER BUJINKAN DOJO?
Yes, we welcome occasional visitors from other Bujinkan Dōjō and those visiting on holiday from overseas.
CAN I KEEP THE DAN / KYU RANK I HAVE FROM ANOTHER DOJO?
Yes, we recognise your previous rank in the Bujinkan. Please let us know before joining.
IS THERE ANY DISTANCE LEARNING?
We don't provide distance learning but may be able to recommend another dōjō closer to you.
SOMETIMES I HAVE TO WORK OVERTIME ON TRAINING DAYS, IS IT OKAY TO BE LATE?
Yes, it is okay if you have to arrive late or leave early due to work or family commitments.
I AM NOT VERY FIT, IS THAT OKAY?
As a beginner, we will set your training at a level that you can manage, and you can train at your own pace. If you train correctly, you will quickly get fit enough for regular training.
I AM NOT VERY FLEXIBLE, IS THAT OKAY?
After joining we will set you some specific exercises to increase your flexibility.
